6 Vegan Protein Myths We're Done Hearing

Vegan protein has an image problem, and honestly, some of it was earned. Older vegan protein isolate powders were chalky, incomplete, or just didn't taste great, and the reputation stuck around longer than the products that caused it. Here are the six myths we hear most, and what's actually true.

Myth: Plant Protein Isn't "Complete"

True of a lot of single plant sources, not true of pea protein specifically. A vegan protein isolate made from pea protein contains all nine essential amino acids, which is the actual definition of a complete protein. It's just naturally lower in one of them, methionine, than some other sources, according to the American Institute for Cancer Research

SURGE is built from hydrolyzed Canadian pea protein for exactly that reason: 25g of complete plant protein per serving, no blend required. V-POWER takes a different route on purpose, pairing pea protein with brown rice protein (26g of protein per serving) so the two round out each other's gaps. Different approaches, same goal: an actually complete plant protein, not a blend engineered to fake it.

Myth: You Can't Build Muscle Without Whey

Muscle growth comes down to hitting your total protein target consistently, with enough essential amino acids to trigger repair, plus actually training. That doesn't require a specific protein source, but it does require showing up: lifting or otherwise loading your muscles is what creates the repair signal in the first place. What matters more than plant versus whey is whether you're hitting your numbers day to day and putting the work in.

Myth: Vegan Protein Always Tastes Like Dirt

Fair, historically. A lot of legacy vegan protein is cloudy, gritty, and leaves an aftertaste that's hard to mix away. That's the whole reason VEGAIN exists: when we launched, our mission was to make plant-based products that actually tasted good and could be used by the best athletes on the planet, starting with our MASS GAINER and V-POWER. Then we took it a level further with SURGE, becoming North America's first clear, plant-based protein.

Myth: It's Automatically Easier to Digest

Not automatically, but for one specific and very common reason it often is. Roughly 70% of people have some degree of lactose intolerance, and whey is a dairy product. If that's you, a dairy-free protein is going to sit better than whey by default.

Myth: Vegan Protein Is Only for Vegans

Most of our customers aren't vegan. They're people who want something that’s clean, is used by top performing athletes, mixes easily, doesn't upset their stomach, and actually tastes good. Vegan just describes what's not in it, not who it's for. It's also worth knowing where it's from: every VEGAIN product is made right here in Canada, and when an ingredient on our label is Canadian grown, we source it in Canada.

Myth: "Clear" Is Just a Gimmick

It's actually the opposite. Clarity is the result of a patent-pending process, not a marketing trick layered on top of an ordinary protein. Clear whey has been one of the biggest trends in the protein world the last couple of years, mixing like a sports drink instead of a shake.

We wanted that same experience available to the roughly 70% of people who don't digest dairy well and can't reach for clear whey in the first place. That's what SURGE is: all the lightness of a clear drink, without the dairy.
