Zero Sugar, Done Right: Stevia vs. Erythritol vs. Artificial Sweeteners
"Zero sugar" on a label doesn't tell you what's actually replacing the sugar, and that choice matters more than most people realize. Here's how the three most common options actually compare.
Stevia
Stevia comes from the leaf of the stevia plant, typically used in the form of Reb A (steviol glycosides). It has zero calories, doesn't spike blood sugar, and current research hasn't turned up cardiovascular or clotting concerns at normal intake levels. It's what VEGAIN uses across the lineup.
Erythritol
Erythritol is a sugar alcohol, and it's become one of the most common "natural" sweeteners in the zero-sugar category. Here's the part that doesn't get talked about enough: a 2023 study published in Nature Medicine linked elevated circulating erythritol to a higher rate of major adverse cardiac events, including heart attack and stroke, and a 2024 follow-up study found it increased platelet reactivity and clot formation compared to regular glucose. It's also more likely than stevia to cause digestive discomfort: gas, bloating, or a laxative effect, at higher doses.
Artificial Sweeteners
This category covers a range of lab-synthesized sweeteners. They're generally calorie-free and don't spike blood sugar, but they carry their own baggage: some have a distinct aftertaste, and public trust in the category has been shaky for years, fairly or not. They're also simply not "natural" by any reasonable definition, which matters to a lot of people reading ingredient labels closely.
Why We Use Stevia
This isn't a close call once you line the three up. Stevia is plant-derived, doesn't carry erythritol's emerging cardiovascular research flags, and doesn't come with the trust baggage of artificial sweeteners. It's why every one of our products with a zero-sugar claim (SURGE, HYDR8, V-POWER, and beyond) is sweetened with stevia leaf, not erythritol or an artificial blend.
The Bottom Line
"Zero sugar" is not one ingredient, it's a category with real differences underneath it. If you're reading labels closely (and you should be), stevia is the sweetener with the cleanest current research profile of the three, which is exactly why it's the one in your VEGAIN shaker.
SURGE has zero sugar and sweetened with stevia leaf.
