Why 5,500 Cyclists Are Fuelling With SURGE This Weekend
This Saturday, over 5,500 riders take on one of the biggest single-day rides in the country, climbing the Sea to Sky highway from Vancouver to Whistler for the GranFondo. We're not just cheering from the sidelines. Every rider picking up their kit at Friday's expo will find a SURGE sachet in it, and we'll have samples on hand for anyone who wants to try it before race day.
What's Actually in Your Kit
Along with your SURGE sachet, every rider picking up their kit gets a coffee on us at The Grind, our café and HQ right on the Vancouver seawall. Swing by after the ride with your flyer, say hi, and grab your coffee.
Why This Ride, Specifically
A ride like the FONDO is exactly what SURGE is built for. You're out for hours, your stomach is already working hard, and a thick, chalky shake is the last thing you want sitting in it. SURGE is hydrolyzed Canadian pea protein that mixes clear in cold water, so it drinks more like a sports drink than a shake. No chunks, no aftertaste, nothing to overthink mid-climb.
It's also, frankly, a very Canadian day. A Canadian ride, Canadian-grown peas, and a product manufactured here in BC. It felt like the right one to show up for.
A Few Fueling Tips for Race Day
However you normally fuel a long ride, a few basics carry over. Start fuelling earlier than feels necessary, especially before the long climb sections, since it's a lot easier to stay ahead of your energy needs than to catch up once you're depleted. Pack anything powdered, SURGE included, somewhere you can reach without stopping, a jersey pocket works fine since it's shelf-stable until you mix it. And don't try anything completely new to your stomach on race day itself, if you want to try SURGE for the first time, grab a sample at Friday's expo so Saturday isn't the first time your body's ever tasted it. Our team will be there from 11-8pm.
Why We Show Up for Days Like This
We're a small, independent Canadian company, and events like this are exactly the kind of community we built VEGAIN to be part of. It's riders pushing themselves for hours on a route that's become a genuine Canadian cycling tradition, fuelled in part by protein made from peas grown a few provinces over. That's the kind of full-circle Canadian moment we don't get tired of.
What to Do If You're Riding
Come find us at the Friday expo. Grab a sample, ask us anything, and if Mango Pineapple or Summerberry Lemonade wins you over, we'll point you to where to grab more after the ride (we'll also have a few on-site that you can buy!) And don't forget your coffee at The Grind, on us, whether you're carb-loading beforehand or celebrating after.
Whether you're chasing a finish time or just trying to enjoy the view from the highway, we hope this weekend gets a little easier and a lot more fun. See you at the expo.
